"Self-portrait with Straitjacket"
Attributed to Rumbrand van Rijn

Little is known of the career of van Rijn, known as "Rumbrand" to his drinking buddies. This is one of the few canvases remaining of his oeuvre, fortunately rescued from the Great Amsterdam Lunatic Asylum Fire of 1669, which sadly claimed the life of its creator. A violent inmate, he was frequently in restraint and became adept at painting with the brush held in his teeth, a technique that would not become popular again until the Quadriplegic Renaissance of the late 20th century.
